Event 10 : Manawatu Mustangs V Rotorua Rebels This was more a Rebels demolition job on the Mustangs
than anything else although the Mustangs kept at it until their cars wouldn't
go no more . Dubious was Barry Hunter's attack on the stationary 53p Kevin
Roberts that spun the tank a full 360 degrees on the spot . Roberts was
then hit accidently by a couple of duelling cars and a red was waved to
check on the well being of Roberts .
Result: Rebels 165 pts , Mustangs 0 pts
Pat Westbury was the first to have a go at Kevin Roberts

Barry Hunter was demolition team leader
Event Eleven : Hawkes Bay Hawkeyes V Palmerston Panthers The clash of the Titans , not quite but with Hawkes Bay
fielding the strongest team in a long while a tough match was expected
. The hits came early and the first on 32b Shane Warner by 46p Kelvin Gray
with a follow through by 8p Peter Rees was brutal and no less soft was
the Hawkeye payback on Gray by 35B Steve O'Dwyer . Gray and Warner were
both effectively retired at this point , a mere third of a lap into the
event . A few laps further on and Barry Podjursky
rolled 33b Murray Long who although landing right way up wasn't able to
get mobile again . A blocking attacking move by 35b Steve O'Dwyer on 8p
Peter Rees and 69 Barry Podjursky came unstuck resulting in a roll over
for 35b and a fire once the car was righted . With only one Hawkeye left
the Panthers were home safe .
Panthers 160 pts , Hawkeyes 25 pts
Kelvin Gray's first trun hit on Shane Warner
was followed with another killer from 8p Peter Rees

A miscue by Barry Podjursky created a Panther collision

Event Twelve : Rotorua Rookie Rebels V Waikato Wanderers This race went a fair distance without anything much
in the way of major damage being done and for the most part the Wanderers
in the form of 8h Dave Roigard were leading . Some sort of confrontation
on the main straight put an end to Roigard's up front run though and 33r
Robbie Maybe took over for the Rookies and looked like having the win home
and housed until he was nailed on the final corner of the last lap . After
a bit of a wait the damaged 8h car of Dave Roigard turned up at the finiah
line to claim the win .
Wanderers 145 pts , Rookie Rebels 40 pts
38r Russel Hunter and 18h Bryce Steiner
6r Tony Smale holding back 36h Kevin Free
One of the hardest hits was on Kevin Free
and sadly we later learned that he suffered an injury that required treatment
33r Robbie Maybe's leading run ended here
in the last turn before the finish flag .
Event 13 : Runoff between Wellington Wildcats and Stratford
Scrappers The Wildcats and the Scrappers had finished up on equal
points in their group so a 2 cars per team run off was held over 4 laps
to decide which team would qualify to go through to the second night .
To most around me it all seemed unfair on the Scrappers
as they had beaten Wellington outright in the first teams clash of the
night but if this method of breaking a tie was decided and announced at
drivers briefing then I guess there can be no argument about it .
It's a week after the event that I write this and I still
feel uneasy about it as to qualify Stratford would have had to beat
the Wildcats twice on the night , a tall task for any team .
Wayne Hemi left from pole and lead until just before
the flag when a second attack from a stationary position by 37s Brendon
Rowlands halted his flight long enough for 5w Tony McLanachan to pass for
the win .
Wildcats win
The four cars for four laps ready for the off
81s Trevor Mason was caught and spun by 5w Tony
McLanachan
